A/VERSION ATLAS
A/Version Atlas—a sketch-mapping of images and writing—acts as an ongoing conversation on the heritage of slavery, and the continuing racialized present. Inspired by a loose interpretation of Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, this work is interested in how memory and history function in the present, as well as how the past and present illuminate each other—that which won’t stay buried.

A Version includes flotsam and jetsam photographs and associations stemming from a trip to Union, WV in 2016. Where my great-great-grandmother came from. Slave passes bundled in boxes, toile wallpaper of pastoral scenes, portrait of John Brown, tombstone from a slave cemetery, drawing of a medieval forlorn beast.
